Well somehow Steve has his dates wrong. This is the story used in Peter White's magazine around July 1998. That was the story that I read and it led me to LQSS in August of that year and purchasing a sprinter off Terry Bennett in the same month. The other thing is there was no track before 1995/96ish BTW....The #42 Sedan is Terry's car.
Shazz, just thinking ...did you make a typo on the heading, making it '89 instead of '98?

Little story on that A1 sprintcar and Raf. My 1st day at LQSS and I'm talking with various people. John May and Raf were pitted near where the pit gate now is. I sat down and introduced myself and we started chatting. Raf asked if I'd driven RC cars before. I said yes. He then handed me the transmitter and said "take it out and do some laps". I looked at John May, who owned the car and he said " if you bend it Raf fixes it" Raf took the car to the track entrance, just a hole in the boards back in those days, and fired the car up. I drove out and slowly circulated the track, to get the feel of the car. Raf said "you wont learn anything at that speed, they go better when they go faster" After about 20 laps I gave the tranmitter back to Raf and walked away with a big smile on the dial. Never ever forgotten the gesture of Raf and John on that very 1st day!

Raf got a wife and a family and a business and a full blown hot rod street car. Unfortunately no room for 1/4 scale, which was a real sad loss to LQSS. He was a racer. Sponsored in the sprintcar ranks by the late John May and factory sponsored in the smaller scales for many years.

I remember going back about 15 years , he used to come up to Newcastle and run 1/8th scale nitro off road, out at Barnsley in some guys back paddock. Think he was sponsored back then by someone who imported the nitro motors and spare parts.

Just talking to Terry Bennett on some history of the photo in the article. That car won the 1997 Title at Ararat with Raf driving and the chassis won the 2006 Title at LQSS with Terrence Armstrong driving. Two Australian 1/4 Scale Sprintcar Owner Titles to the late John May, 9 years apart!. Today the car sits in Terry's shop.

Went through the files and found these..... Here's Raf, 2nd from right, in the starting line-up for the 2000 Australian Title at LQSS.
The car after its Aussie Title win, 1997.
Raf, after winning the NSW Title. Forgot the year.Very early 2000s

oh,, by the way. the track was built in 1996, after i returned from adelaide in oct 1995 and got together with geoff miles, and bill drew who were also in adelaide. then met up with terry bennett, john may and lindsay chew and we all decided to ask lqss if we could build a track. ok was given and we started in feb of 1996 and finished it the day before we held the nsw titles in june long weekend 1996.the rest is history which should never be forgotten

I saw the car at Terry Bennett's shed this week. I didn't have a camera with me! It still looks the same as this photo from the very 1st John May Memorial race.
