Jeff and I took the time to drive about 6 hours north of Knoxville to Howard Lake Minnesota and visit Mr Jan Gilmer. Those amazing 1/4 scale midgets are built in a modest worshop, behind his house. He is one cool guy and entertained us for hours about his life, his 1/4 scale cars, his full size 3/4 midgets that he races and his amazing life. Here's the man himself, working on one of the last Gilmer midgets ever to be produced. He has parts for only 4/5 more. He now spends most of his time restoring old 3/4 midgets. When we asked to see one of his finished cars he said that he had sold every one he had, even the 1st one he ever built in 1986....that being the red #45 car.

This is Jan's passion these days. Restoring a 1947 Kurtis Kraft 3/4 midget. Jan reformed most of the body on an English Wheel. The finish on this car is extraordinary. Photos don't do it justice... He still runs the car in the back of the shed. The new car will be a shelf queen, he reckoned....way too nice to run.
